Don’t Punk with My Heart

I recently bought Spinal Tap on DVD (don’t chastise me for not owning it already). A bonus movie sold along with the mockumentary as a “companion piece” was Sid and Nancy, the biopic about the tragic and ultimately disastrous relationship between Sex Pistols bassist Sid Vicious and his drug-abusing amour Nancy Spungen. After watching Sid and Nancy for the first time, I realized that whoever decided the classic Christopher Guest comedy was perfectly matched with the true story of a self-destructive junkie rockstar and his groupie girlfriend must consider “prop guitars” to be a theme, because that’s all the two movies had in common.

Film Review: Moscow, Belgium
A little European nation gets the romantic comedy just right
by Chelsea Bain

Good news: The rom-com is alive and well, and it’s living in Belgium. Moscow, Belgium, to be exact.

Movie Review: Rudo y Cursi
The boys from Y Tu Mama Tambien
reunite for another crowd-pleaser
by Chelsea Bain

A word to the wise: If a campy, accordion-laden version of the immortal “I Want You to Want Me” (sung in Spanish) unabashedly stuck in your head for the next few eons sounds as exciting as a root canal, absolutely do not see Rudo y Cursi.

Those who deem themselves just fine and dandy with this inconvenience will certainly get a kick out of the latest dramedy to come from Mexico, a story about two banana farmer brothers who skyrocket to big time soccer players and are left holding on for their dear lives. This is the second film where real-life best buds Gael García Bernal and Diego Luna show off their chemistry; their ability to resonate off of one another works wonders when they’re in front of the camera.
