Local Café and Bookstore Puts
Newbury Competition to Shame

Trident Café is one on the last small, independent bookstores – or stores for that matter, on Newbury. Trident remains a stalwart holdout on a street that is slowing making itself obsolete because of high rent. Many of the smaller, independently-owned shops have relocated to greener pastures in the South End or simply have folded under the increasing cost of operating at such an overpriced locale. As one walks down Newbury these days, they are greeted by massive chains and many, many empty retail spaces in between. What happened to Boston’s main drag that was so bustling only a few years ago? The answer: Greedy landlords are trying to make the most of their dollar.
