New Year Nightlife

Happy 2006, Boston: Here’s to another year of spectacular city nightlife.
Still, this is one writer, dance floor guru and martini guzzler who spies an unfortunate after-dark trend: Homogenization. While Bostonians should continue to celebrate every last drop of our fantastic nightlife (and I do mean that literally), we must remain vigilant and stave off the increasing sameness of the city’s hotspots. Where there was once variety in Boston nightlife, there lately seems to be a rapidly growing case of copycat. A Friday night at Bar X might as well be a Saturday night at Bar Y, or Z. Or RSTLNE. You get the idea.

Food is travel. Travel is food. Cultures express themselves through their dishes, eliciting memories of centuries of discovery and delicacy all in one mouthful. Food takes you back to the very moments you savor. You were filled with faith of many different kinds as you had your first taste of espresso gelato while standing in front of the Vatican. Mole sauce both seared and pleased your taste buds on a hot summer night in Oaxaca. Food takes us back to places we have been, places we are and places have wanted to go. Some people travel to try out new things, to taste a little bit of other people’s culture, to entice themselves with a spice or seasoning they would never dream of using otherwise. Some people travel to have these senses when they get back the sense of “I’ve done it;” “I’ve eaten there;” “I’ve eaten that.”
