A Delicate Balance
Career and Higher Education
by KJ Hamilton

The idea to better your life with education is never a bad decision. We are bombarded by advertisements everyday; everything from shampoo to technical school. In one afternoon, there are at least two dozen commercials that encourage people to step out of their “underpaid and overworked” jobs and “choose a rewarding career.” There are signs on the subway for extension schools that offer classes and internships in places such as London and New York.

What about those of us who have the desire to learn but no time to intern in the Big Apple? The idea of going to school part time might be foreign to some people. For others, it might be a desire that’s repressed by the tedious demands that life dares to make. If you pay close attention to those television commercials, or read every advertisement on the T with a bit of longing, fear not. It is possible to attain your degree while working full time.

There are several options to decide on when it comes to collegiate education. However, you should choose wisely as this is definitely a major lesson in time management. Don’t overload yourself, even if it means taking one class at a time. Study and weigh all of your options before you dive into the pool.

Evening & Weekend Classes - A lot of universities offer classes in the evenings. Flexible schedules are designed to cater to the crazy schedule of the working adult. While most of the courses are offered on multiple nights, there are a few classes that meet just one night a week. Some classes might even be scheduled on the weekends.

Distance Learning - Another option to look into is distance learning. The definition of distance learning is “any type of information exchange that takes place across a physical distance.” The teacher is usually located far away from the student, and can take place via the telephone, the mail, video or the internet.

Online Courses - Some major universities have adopted the idea of online classes. These courses offer the opportunity to attend class without having to leave the office or the home. In fact, some colleges offer the opportunity to earn certificates entirely via the internet.

Transfer Credits - It’s a good idea to check to see if your school of choice accepts transferred credits. You could use these credits towards your studies and make your workload lighter. Some schools might even accept work experience for class credit, so be sure to inquire about this possibility as well.

Day-time Classes - It may also be possible to make an arrangement with your employer to take a class during the day. You could also consider taking a class during your lunch break.

And, while you’re talking to your boss about these options, don’t forget to discuss tuition reimbursement. Some companies offer this to their employees as a benefit, and as a way to contribute to the well-being of those who choose to better themselves.

If you’re already employed by a college or university, check out their benefits. A lot of universities offer either free or discounted tuition to their employees.

There is, of course, the option for financial aid and specialized loans. Make sure to check the deadlines to submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as it varies from semester to semester.

It’s a struggle to effectively manage time between a full-time job, family commitments and class work. Planning ahead is a vital key to good time management. Discuss your options with your boss to ensure effective productivity at work. Still, it’s said that nothing worthwhile is ever easy. If you make the decision to further your education, it will be a tough road ahead. In the end, the benefits you’ll receive will far outweigh the bumps in the road along the way. So, take the chance. You are worth the effort. Those commercials on television and advertisements on the train will soon serve as a nice reminder of the path you’ve traveled. And, who knows? Maybe your new degree will take you to London or New York—no internship required.
